IN HIS BODY, JESUS DID THE WILL OF GOD

Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: “… a body You have prepared for Me. … “I have come …to do Your will, O God.” “ … By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.  Hebrews 10:5-10

Hebrews 10:5-10 teaches that Jesus entered His God-prepared body in order to do the will of God. Then Jesus makes it clear that God’s purpose was for Him to enter an earthly body to die.

Notice the closing words of the passage quoted. “By that will (of God) we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

The word “sanctified” means “set apart.” Other Scriptures indicate that we were sanctified when we received Jesus as our Lord and Savior and that we are being sanctified as we live out the life of grace. In the body of His birth, Jesus made it possible for us to become Christians and to mature as Christians.

Jesus came to live in an earthly body for other important reasons. For example, He came to show us what God is like and how man can and should live.

Hebrews 10:9 says, “He takes away the first (covenant) that He might establish the second (covenant).” In chapters 7-9 of Hebrews, the words “first” and “second” are used to speak of the first and second covenants.

The Israelites were given the first covenant, which placed them under the responsibility of trying to serve God in self-effort. Life in the second covenant that Jesus inaugurated by His death enables us to live by grace.
