JESUS CAME TO BE OUR EXAMPLE

For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. John 6:38

According to the words of Jesus, He came into this world for many different reasons. Above all, He came to die for our sins and to be raised again. Among other things, Jesus says that He came to do the will of the Father.

We must never lose sight of the fact that Jesus was a man just like the rest of us. He never ceased to be God but He has never ceased to be a man. Also, He was a perfect man who lived a perfect life. Because He was a perfect man, He is the perfect one to show us how to please the Father. Consider some of the ways Jesus reveals to us about doing the will of the Father.

The life of Jesus was one of giving to others. He healed the sick and raised the dead. He taught truth to guide people of all generations including the generation of His own time on earth. In serving others, Jesus showed us the quality of love that pleases the Father.

Jesus never ceased doing things and saying things that He knew would stir His enemies to anger. He was continually upsetting the scribes and Pharisees with both His actions and teachings.

Jesus never gave emphasis to the possession of material things. He said to a man, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”

He set the example of sacrifice in all His sufferings but most of all when He gave His life on a cruel cross for the sake of all mankind.

These are important examples Jesus left for us to follow. And He even provided the resource for us to be able to follow them.

When He died as the last Adam, Jesus made it possible for us to have victory over our flesh—the source of our selfishness. When He poured out the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, He made it possible for us to have Him as our resource for life, power and love. Without the hindrance of the flesh and with the presence of Jesus in our lives, we have the correct resource for following the example of Jesus in doing the will of the Father.
