DON'T FORGET YOURSELF

Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.  Philippians 2:4

When the Apostle suggested that believers look out for their own interests, he surely includes our own spiritual life and growth.

“I realized I had been telling others about a walk with God from memory.”

The spiritual leader who made that statement was confessing that he had not been looking out for his own spiritual interests. He had drifted from a personal walk with God while encouraging others to have such a walk.

Another spiritual leader confessed, “I realized it had been years since I had read the Bible for my own needs. I had read it for materials for sermons.”

Perhaps the greatest danger a spiritual leader faces is that of being so busy serving others that he drifts from his personal fellowship with God. Until he returns to a daily walk with God, he abandons his need for personal spiritual growth.

Life then becomes stale, ministry becomes stale and ineffective, a personal walk with God is nothing more than a memory, and burnout is likely just around the corner.

Let us not forget ourselves!

Our greatest safeguard against forgetting our own need of spiritual vitality and spiritual growth is daily living out the life of grace—throughout each day obeying the commands for experiencing the new-creation life.

When we live out our union with Christ, we are filled with the Holy Spirit and He will always keep us in the Scriptures, praying, and lovingly serving others.

When we keep the first things first, our personal lives and our service to others will be joyful and fulfilling.
