LIVING A LIE?

The poor, deluded fool feeds on ashes; he is trusting what can never give him any help at all. Yet he cannot bring himself to ask, “Is this thing, this idol that I'm holding in my hand, a lie?” Isaiah 44:20

In this passage, the Lord speaks of the person who makes for himself an idol that he will trust to be his god. He takes a piece of wood and uses part of it to warm himself and to cook with but then takes another part of the same wood and makes the false god.

This is a picture of anyone who pursues fulfillment in any way other than God’s way. In living such a life, one “feeds on ashes.” Living in God’s will is like feeding on foods that are delicious and nourishing.

The passage also teaches that the person who trusts his own selfish way of life trusts something that cannot help him at all.

The legalist who is doing his best for Jesus pursues a life of feeding on ashes. In Romans 7, Paul writes of his failure to keep the commandment not to covet by attempting to keep the commandment in his own wisdom and strength. He was feeding on ashes. His effort ended in an emotional state that he called death.

When we live out the New Covenant by experiencing our oneness with Christ we will feed on that which brings fulfillment of life.

Blessed are those who are living outside of God’s will when they finally say, “This way of life is a lie.” God will receive them with open arms.
