BORN TO MAKE US SONS

God sent forth His Son ... that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!"”  Galatians 4:4-6

The Father sent His Son, Jesus, that those who receive Him as Lord and Savior might receive the adoption as God’s sons. God now has hundreds of millions of sons. In John 14:17, Jesus said to His disciples that the Holy Spirit who dwells in Him will be in them. This promise did not stop with those Jesus was talking to. God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into the hearts of all of His sons—all those who have received Jesus as Lord and Savior. The Holy Spirit who worked in the life of Jesus will work in the lives of all of God’s sons to enable each of them to bring others to Christ who also will become sons.

Another blessing of the Holy Spirit living in believers is that of giving us assurance that we are God’s children. The Holy Spirit gives this assurance by prompting us to call God our Father. The passage reads that we cry out, “Abba, Father!” “Abba” is an Aramaic word meaning Father. It is like saying to the Father, “Daddy” or “Papa.”

There are other evidences that assure us that we are the children of God. First John5:13 says, “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.” We can do a study of the entire Book of 1 John if we are having our doubts about our salvation.

At this Christmas time and beyond, we can thank the heavenly Father for the gift of His Son, for our adoption as sons, for the presence of the Holy Spirit in us, and for the gift of assurance that we have been saved and are sons of God

You might have noticed that there is a new and refreshing emphasis on the Holy Spirit coming from our pulpits. We can thank God also for that. When we walk in the Spirit, we are living out the New Covenant.
