HIS NAME IS IMMANUEL

So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” Matthew 1:22-23

With these words, Matthew explains the angel’s message to the doubting Joseph that Mary’s child was conceived by the Holy Spirit and would be the Savior. Matthew 1:24-25 says, “Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.”

God had come to live with us. He was fully man. He was fully God. Because He was a man and came to live as a man, we can look to Him as our perfect example of things we should do. Jesus came to change the way men think and believe, show us what the love of God is like, enable men to know God and walk in fellowship with Him.

But how can we as mere men even think of doing the things Jesus did? John 14:10 quotes Jesus saying, “The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.” The Father does the works. He then adds in John 14:12, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.” By continuing to trust in Jesus, we can do even greater works than He did. Of course, we will not shed our blood for others to enter the Kingdom, but we can tell others that Jesus did.

Our pathway to such a life is through experiencing our oneness with Christ. Then Jesus will live through us (Galatians 2:20).

We can make our thoughts of the baby Jesus become very personal. As true man, He came to make it possible for me to enter the Kingdom of God. As true man, He came to show me how to live.
