LIGHTS SHINING IN A PERVERSE GENERATION

Do all things without murmurings and disputings:  That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world.  Philippians 2:14-15

This was written approximately 2000 years ago but sounds as though it could have been written this morning to a group of God-loving believers.

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.” Paul is applying that same truth to Christians in the midst of a sinful generation. Paul is writing these words with great hope. Christians can bring light into a world that is crooked and perverse.

In order to shine as lights Paul writes, “Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke …”

In verse 16 Paul adds, “Holding forth the word of life.” In a world of darkness Christians are spiritual lights bringing message of life into darkness.

Throughout history some enslaved to the darkness have looked at the lights and heard the message of life and left the darkness for the light. Our light and message of life will not bring all those in darkness to the light. However, by the power of God some will respond to the lights and the word of life.

Philippians 2:13 reads, “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; For is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of [his] good pleasure.”

This quality of life is at its greatest height when we live out the life of grace.
