GOD'S RIVER OF DELIGHTS

You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.  Psalm 36:8

Several translations of this verse use the word delights rather than pleasures. The message of the verse is that God desires to bring pleasures and delights into the lives of his children.

The unceasing flow of a river illustrates God’s constant desire to bring pleasure and delight into the lives of his children.

The word “joy” gives expression to the thought of pleasures and delights. Galatians 5:22 and Ephesians 5:18 reveal that God has made a way for the believer to experience continual joy just as the flowing river is a continual source of supply. Ephesians 5:18 tells us  to be filled continually with the Spirit while Galatians 5:22 says that “joy” is one of the characteristics of the fruit of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:17 which speaks of the battle in the heart of the Christian between the flesh and the Spirit makes it clear that any believer can be filled with the Spirit when he experiences the spiritual crucifixion of the flesh.

When we walk in grace under the leadership of the Spirit, He uses us to be a blessing to others. The result of that brings great joy to the one walking in the Spirit as well as joy to the one blessed.

A believer can drink from God’s river of pleasures even during the tough times of life. James 1:2-3 says, “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.”
