ABOUND IN THIS GRACE ALSO

But as you abound in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us—see that you abound in this grace also.  2 Corinthians 8:7

The grace that Paul desires the Corinthians to abound in also is that of giving to an offering for the poor saints in Jerusalem that he was collecting. All of chapters 8 and 9 of 2 Corinthians deal with Paul’s appeal to the church. He begins his appeal with:

Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia: that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality.  2 Corinthians 8:1-2

By God’s grace the Christians of Macedonia had made a sacrificial gift for the saints in Jerusalem. In 2 Corinthians 8:7 Paul is encouraging his readers to respond to the grace of God who is enabling them to abound in giving just as that grace was enabling their faith, speech, knowledge and love for others.

Paul assures his readers that if they will respond to the prompting of the Holy Spirit to give, God will provide for them. He tells them that their giving is like sowing seed. They will reap a harvest from what they sow. “But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” (2 Corinthians 9:6).

When we live out the life of grace, that grace will prompt in us a spirit of of generosity. We will sow. And we will reap. Consider another passage about sowing and reaping.

Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.  Luke 6:38
