ARE WE SO FOOLISH?

Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? Galatians 3:3

Paul knew that his readers had understood that they had received the Holy Spirit by faith and had walked in the Spirit by faith just as he had taught them.

After Paul  moved on, false teachers came and told the believers in Galatia that what Paul taught was wrong and that they must keep the law. Some of the Galatians believed in and followed these false teachers. When word got to Paul of what had happened, he wrote the Galatians that the false teachers had bewitched them and that they were foolish for following them.

According to Romans 7, Paul himself had fallen back into law-living after his conversion to Christ. In Romans 7:9, he writes, “I was once alive without the law but when the law came, sin revived and I died.”  In Paul’s state of “death”—the agony and failure caused by trying to live by he law—God revealed to him that when He received Jesus as Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit baptized him into Christ. God also revealed that by being in Christ he had been spiritually crucified, buried and resurrected. In addition, God revealed to Paul how to experience his spiritual crucifixion, burial and resurrection. There are no historical accounts of these revelations but we know that they happened because of Paul’s writings.

Paul believed and followed what God had revealed to him. God delivered him from the “death” he was experiencing. From that time forward Paul taught the error of believers living by the law.

God’s word stands true today. When we seek to live the Christian life by attempting to keep laws of any type, we are being foolish. We are living in the flesh and are making ourselves subject to any of the tragic works of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21).
