EXPOSING SIN

And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.  Ephesians 5:11

Paul uses the word “exposed” also in Ephesians 5:13. The Greek word translated “expose” and “exposed” in these two verses is translated “convict” in John 16:8 and refers to the work of the Holy Spirit.

And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.

Do believers have the same ministry as the Holy Spirit? A

study of the larger context of this passage in Ephesians provides the answer.

In verse 8, Paul writes, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.” It is by walking in the light that Christians will expose to those who are darkness their unfruitful works of darkness. Anyone who is living out his oneness with Christ in crucifixion, burial and resurrection, is walking in the light and will expose sin in the lives of those who are darkness.

Those who walk in the light are filled with the Holy Spirit and the Spirit working through them will expose sins to those of darkness that can lead them to become “light.”

First Peter 3:1 tells wives that by submissiveness to their husbands they will lead their husbands to Christ—without words. This Ephesians passage is telling us that by walking in the light, we will expose sin to those in darkness which can lead them to salvation.

The truths of this Ephesian passage should be a strong motivation to all believers to walk in the light by living out their oneness with Christ and be the instrument of the Holy Spirit to expose sin in the lives of those in darkness.
