CALLED IN RIGHTEOUSNESS

Thus says God the LORD …."I am the LORD, I have called You in righteousness …  Isaiah 42:5-6

In the Servant passage of Isaiah 42:1-7 God the Father tells the Son that He has called Him in righteousness. This first of all means that God will express His own righteousness to the Son

Concerning this feature of the call in righteousness consider Isaiah 42:6a:

… I will also hold You by the hand and watch over You …

Verses 6b-7 indicate that the Father will express His heart of righteousness through the Son.

And I will appoint You as a covenant to the people, as a light to the nations, to open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the dungeon And those who dwell in darkness from the prison.

A third meaning of the call in righteousness is that the Father has sent the Son to produce righteousness in those who are brought out from the dungeon and darkness. Second Corinthians 5:21 reads:

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

First Corinthians 1:30 adds to the thought of Jesus producing righteousness in those called from the dungeon and the darkness. The passage reads:

But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption …

God the Father has placed us in God the Son so that the Son might be our righteousness. We must, though, receive our righteousness:

… those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.  Romans 5:17

“Receive” in this verse means to continue to receive. We do so by continuing to live out the five commands of Romans 6:11-13.
