HIGH PRIESTLY PRIVILEGE—and more 

 

Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus … Hebrews 10:19

 

This passage is an invitation to all believers to enter the Most Holy Place of heaven. The invitation is stressed with the words “... the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom …” (Matthew 27:51).” The veil was torn just as Jesus died on the cross. The Hebrews passage refers to the Most Holy Place of the tabernacle.

 

To be there was to be in the presence of God.  

 

And the LORD said unto Moses … I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.  Leviticus 16:2

 

God appeared at the mercy seat in the Most Holy Place of the tabernacle. Only the High Priest could enter there. He entered there once a year. That was on the Day of Atonement which was on the tenth day of the seventh month, (Leviticus 16:34). The High Priest entered the Holy of Holies to make atonement for his own sins and for the sins of the people.

 

Contrast that with the invitation to all believers to enter the heavenly Holy of Holies—into the presence of God in Hebrews 10:22.

 

Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

 

This verse tells us that one who enters the heavenly Holy of Holies must have “faith” and a “true heart,” which reflects genuineness. “Faith” is believing that there is a heavenly Holy of Holies and that it can be entered through the shed blood of Jesus. The sprinkled heart and washed body speak of repentance and forgiveness of sin.

 

There is more for the believer enjoying the high priestly privilege of entering into the presence of God than there was for the High Priest of the Israelites. In contrast with the Old Testament High Priest, New Testament believers do not have limits placed on them for entering the heavenly Holy of Holies. They are invited to enter every day and at any time of day.

 

Paul describes our entering the Holy of Holies to experience God the Father and God the Son as being in the heavenlies. This occurs as we claim our oneness with Christ in our spiritual resurrection.
