FLOODED WITH GRACE, LOVE AND FAITH

And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy 1:14

The words “exceedingly abundant” are the translation of one word. It has the idea of overflow. It also is in a tense that means a onetime experience. There are two different times that Paul could be referring to. Obviously, it refers to that Damascus road conversion experience. An abundant overflow of grace brought with it an overflow of love and faith.

The overflow can also describe Paul’s first experience of his spiritual crucifixion, burial and resurrection. Unlike his conversion experience, there is no historical account of this event. However, chapters 6 and 7 of Romans clearly indicate that there was such an experience resulting again in an abundant overflow of grace, love and faith.

Paul’s testimony in Romans chapters six and seven reveal that when he returned to living by the law the overflow of grace, faith and love ceased. However, in both of those chapters along with chapter eight of Romans the overflow returned when he experienced his spiritual crucifixion, burial and resurrection. In Paul, that overflow continued the rest of his life.

A pastor testified in a Christian gathering, “twenty five years ago, I had a burden for everyone I met. I have lost that burden.” At his conversion, he had that overflow of grace, love and faith. He could have had a return of that quality of life if he had known that he had been spiritually crucified, buried and resurrected and how to experience it. A deacon testified, “I would give anything if I could feel like I did when I was first saved.”

Have you had that first experience of the overflow of grace, love and faith but no longer have it? Do you want to have it again? Do you want to live with that overflow? You can. Jesus provided the way for all of God’s children to live that way in His crucifixion, burial and resurrection.

Paul testified in 1 Timothy 1:14 that we experience that quality of life “in Christ Jesus.” Continue to live out your oneness with Christ and that overflow will return.
