our holy calling

God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began … 2 Timothy 1:8-9

In verse 11, Paul describes his holy calling.

… to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.

Before time began, God called Paul and all believers with a holy calling. With the word “holy” Paul means a calling that sets us apart to Himself and to the special calling. When one receives Jesus as Lord and Savior, even though just as a child, he is gifted for his calling.

It is a calling “not according to our works.” Likely, the idea here is that we are not to live out our calling in our own wisdom and strength.

It is a calling “according to God’s purpose.” Each believer will make his distinctive contribution to the Kingdom of God as he fulfills his calling by walking in the Spirit.

Our calling is “according to grace.” It is God’s intention that we live out our calling by His grace. This is why it is so important that believers understand and experience grace. It is only as we live out God’s holy calling through grace that God will do His distinctive works for the Kingdom through us.

Our holy calling of purpose and grace was given to us “in Christ Jesus.” When we were saved, we were baptized by the Holy Spirit into oneness with Christ in crucifixion, burial and resurrection. We have the privilege of living out our holy calling by experiencing life on these terms.
