WORDS OF WISDOM

… my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom … we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age … 1 Corinthians 2:4-7

In the first four chapters of 1 Corinthians, Paul introduces and deals with the problem of four factions in the church. Some followed either the teachings of Jesus, Peter, Paul, or Apollos.

In the same four chapters Paul rejects the teachings of the wisdom of men.

Because of Paul’s ongoing attention to the divisions and the contrast between the wisdom of man and the wisdom of God, we can conclude that the followers of each group were adding their own personal thoughts to the teachings of the one they followed.

Paul testifies that he had not taught the Corinthians with the “words of human wisdom.” He had taught the mature believers with wisdom. But it was wisdom from God and not from man.

Then in chapter three Paul writes:

According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.  1 Corinthians 3:10-11

In I Corinthians 3:12-13, Paul then adds a warning which is still valid in our day for those of us who teach the people of God.

Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is.

In 1 Corinthians 1:30 Paul writes that the Father has placed us “in” Christ that He (Jesus) might become our wisdom. When we live out our union with Christ, our teaching will be the wisdom of God. It will have the quality of gold, silver, and precious stones. It will stand the test of fire.
