blessed are the pure in heart

Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.  Matthew 5:8

This is one of the beatitudes in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount telling us that we can have a “Blessed” life by seeing God. Yet, Scripture says, “no one can see God.”

… who [God] alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.  1 Timothy 6:16

With His statement “they shall see God” Jesus must have meant “know” God. We can know God if we have a pure heart because we live in fellowship with God. The word translated “pure” is often translated “clean.” So, how is it possible for sinful man to have a clean heart?

We may continue to have a clean heart by continuing to believe that we are dead to sin and alive to God and by choosing to be dead to sin and alive to God (Romans 6:11-13). In obeying these commands, we have a growing victory over sin. We keep our hearts clean.

However, not any one of us will live out his life without sinning. When we do sin, God stands ready to give us forgiveness and a restored clean heart.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  1 John 1:9

The cleansed heart restores us to fellowship with God. Through this fellowship, we continue to grow in our knowledge of God, which results in a “blessed life.”
