SPIRITUAL GROWTH FOR THE SPIRITUALLY MATURE

… but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ … Ephesians 4:15

In Ephesians 4:13 Paul wrote of saints arriving at spiritual maturity as a result of serving in the Kingdom. Before service, though, the saints are to be equipped by understanding and experiencing their union with Christ—which results in Christ living through them.

In verse 15 Paul writes that mature believers are prepared for more growth—growth into Jesus in all things.

Ephesians 4:16 indicates that growing up into Jesus means believers permitting Jesus to express Himself through them to build a strong and unbreakable fellowship in their church. The verse reads:

… from whom [Jesus] the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share …

A strong and unbreakable church fellowship is only one result of growing up into Jesus in all things.

In Ephesians 4:15 Paul writes that mature believers will grow up into Jesus in all things by “… speaking the truth in love …” With these words Paul is saying that every mature member becomes a teacher.

The words “speaking the truth” translate only one word which can mean “speaking the truth” or “living the truth.”

The verb tense of the word translated speaking is one of continual action. Equipping the saints is teaching them how to live out their union with Christ. Paul is saying, in part, that speaking and living out their union with Christ continually will result in the mature growing “up into Jesus in all things.”

The result of growing up into Jesus in all things is that of permitting Jesus to be one’s life, moment-by-moment in all things.
