PARTICIPATING IN THE FATHER'S WORK

But Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I have been working."   John 5:17

Jesus spoke these words to the Jews who were ready to kill Him because he had healed a man on the Sabbath day.

Jesus was telling His tormenters that if they were blaming Him for doing something wrong, they were blaming His father also. Jesus said that He was only participating in His Father’s work. Notice the follow-up statement of Jesus.

… the Son can do nothing of Himself but what He sees the Father do, for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.  John 5:19

Throughout the Gospel of John, Jesus makes many similar statements. Let’s read what Jesus says in John 14:10:

The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.

The Gospel of John provides the most helpful instruction to everyone experiencing the new-creation life because in John’s gospel we learn how Jesus, our model, lived.

Jesus participated in the works of the Father. We are also to participate in the works of the Father.

Obviously, God does some things that no believer can have a part in. However, God’s plan is to involve the believers in many of His works. Ephesians 2:10 says:

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

All believers who live out the new-creation life can say with Jesus, “My Father has worked until now and I work.” We can provide our heavenly Father with a visible and audible vehicle. He will place us where He wants us. He will guide what we say and do. He then will provide the power for the heavenly results.
