IS YOUR HEART STILL HARDENED

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "It is because we have no bread." But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, "Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened?” Mark 8:16-17

Ordinarily, we think of a hardened heart as one that is in total resistance to the Lord. That is not the case in this passage. Jesus had just said to the disciples that they were to be aware of the “leaven of the Pharisees and Herod.” The disciples responded with, “Is it because we have no bread?” At that point Jesus said, “Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened?”

The disciples had just witnessed Jesus feeding 4,000 with only a few loaves and fishes. Earlier, they had witnessed Jesus feeding 5,000 with only a few loaves and fishes.

In this setting, then, Jesus is accusing them of having a hardened heart because they had not experienced a developed faith by experiencing the miracles.

A church, along with its young pastor, had experienced a marvelous miracle sent by God. The young pastor’s faith in God had grown greatly by seeing this miraculous work. Soon after this revelation of God’s expression of love and power, the pastor spoke to a small group of men about another opportunity for God to reveal Himself as a mighty worker of miracles. Immediately, one of the men said, “Maybe God would not provide for that.” Just as the disciples had a hardened heart, this man had a hardened heart.

Do you have a hardened heart? Have God’s miracles in your life left you still without faith in Him.

Galatians 5:22 reveals that one result of being filled with the Holy Spirit is faith. Admittedly, some translate the word for faith as faithfulness. Yet “faith” should be the correct word. If your heart is hardened, just continue to receive the filling of the Holy Spirit.
