DETHRONEMENT OF SIN

For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.  Romans 6:14

Romans 6:14 tells us that sin or our sin nature is dethroned when we obey the five commands found in Romans 6:11-13 because we are not living under the law but under grace.

We place ourselves under law by our attempting to keep the commands of the Bible or by trying to keep self-made rules—even the rule of doing our best for Jesus. When we place ourselves under law, we keep our sin nature in power. Consider these verses:

… the strength of sin is the law … 1 Corinthians 15:56

… the sinful passions which were aroused by the law ... Romans 7:5

For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”  Romans 7:7

I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died.  Romans 7:9

For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed meRomans 7:11

But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead.  Romans 7:8

When we are under grace, God takes the responsibility for our lives. In Romans five and six Paul describes the Christian life as a life of grace. In Romans eight he attributes the life of grace to the Holy Spirit.

When we walk in the Spirit by living out the commands of Romans 6:11-13, we receive our directions from the Holy Spirit and they are always in harmony with the Scriptures. The Holy Spirit lives out His directions through us. Law-living is eliminated.
