Devotional - week of July 24, 2011

For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.  1 Thessalonians 2:13

Because the Thessalonians received the word of God, they received Jesus as Lord and Savior. Paul follows his statement about the Thessalonians receiving the word of God with, “the word of God which also effectively works in you who believe.”

The word “believe” could better be translated “continue to believe.” As the word of God worked in the minds and hearts of the Thessalonian Christians to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior, it continues to work in the lives of those who continue in faith.

Every serious student of Scripture knows that he has not fully mastered the entire word of God. He knows there is more God wants to reveal to him from His word. He knows that the word of God continues to work in him by showing him more truth—truth about God the Father, God the Son and God the Spirit.

When a believer begins to experience his oneness with Christ, he opens the door to an ever greater work of the word in him. This is so because by living out his oneness with Christ, the believer is filled with the Holy Spirit who guides him into all truth and teaches him all things.

As the Holy Spirit reveals new truth to one living out his oneness with Christ, he experiences continual change in his life. New truth in the heart of a believer results in spiritual growth. It results in the revelation of things in the life of the believer that should not be there. The Holy Spirit takes the new truths of the word that work in the believer a greater faith in God.

We should look at our Bibles as the great treasure house of truth, of change and of blessing.
