LIVING ON MILK?

For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.  Hebrews 5:13

Are we living on milk? Hebrews 5:13 tells us that believers who are not skilled in the word of righteousness are spiritual infants and they partake of milk only. Hebrews 6:1-2 lists some “milk diet” truths.

Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

A believer who does not go beyond these “milk diet” themes will remain in spiritual infancy. We need to be in the meat of the word and one of the “meat diet” themes is the word of righteousness.

The New Testament teaches two types of righteousness. One is declared righteousness called justification. When one receives Jesus as Lord and Savior, God declares him to be righteous. From the standpoint of eternal salvation, God will relate to him as if he is righteous.

The other type of righteousness taught in the New Testament is realized righteousness. This means that the person who is declared righteous can be righteous. The believer’s realized righteousness is the righteousness of God as He lives in and through the believer.

It is the realized righteousness that the believer must be skilled in. The skill is in knowing how to experience righteousness and in permitting God to be righteous in and through him.

Becoming skilled in the word of righteousness begins with getting beyond a “milk diet” and getting on a “meat diet.” The “meat diet” that is essential is a study of our oneness with Christ.

Why would a deeply conscientious believer be satisfied with staying on a “milk diet” when a “meat diet” is available?

The answer must be that his mentors have never introduced him to the “meat diet” of his union with Christ.
