PROGRESSIVE REVELATION

And God spoke to Moses and said to him: "I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name Lord I was not known to them. Exodus 6:2-3

God spoke these words to Moses. They clearly express the biblical truth of “progressive revelation.” God first revealed Himself as God Almighty and later on as Lord. Jesus laid down the same truth of progressive revelation when He said to His Apostles:

I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth ... John 16:12-13

Just as there is progressive revelation of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit there is also progressive revelation in the life of the believer. An example is the revelation God made to Paul following his conversion to Christ. The passage reads:

But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb and called me through His grace, to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately confer with flesh and blood … Galatians 1:15-16

God revealed to Paul something that had been true of him since Jesus had become his Lord and Savior. A believer’s understanding that he is in Christ and that he is already spiritually crucified, buried and resurrected comes by divine revelation.

God continues to reveal sins that are in our lives. We begin to experience victory over the sins that are known to us then God begins to expose other sins that we have never realized before. Some believers testify of such experiences. Some testify that they now have a better understanding of their sin nature.

Progressive revelation becomes more of a reality in a believer’s life after the revelation and experience of his union with Christ in his spiritual crucifixion, burial and resurrection. By experiencing our union with Christ, we are filled with the Holy Spirit. He then provides us the blessings of progressive revelation.
