LIVING A HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERED LIFE

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. James 5:17

By the time of the New Testament, Elijah was considered to be one of the greatest men ever known. Yet, the Bible says of him that he “was a man with a nature like ours.” Similar statements are made of Peter, Paul and Barnabas (Acts 10:26 and Acts14:15). A study of Elijah in First and Second Kings will reveal that he became depressed, dejected and confused just like us.

These were real people and struggled with real problems just like us. Yet God performed miraculous works through them. How was this possible? James 5:17 says that Elijah “prayed earnestly.” He prayed because he was in fellowship with the Father and totally dependent on Him. The Apostle Paul said it this way, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” I Corinthians 11:1.

Jesus was totally dependent on the Father. He did nothing on His own initiative. As we are totally dependent on the Father, He will lead us to pray earnestly. When we pray earnestly, we will see the miracles of God performed in and through us.

On three occasions in the Old Testament, the Israelites prayed, “All that the Lord has said we will do” (Exodus 19:8; 24:3, 7). They failed in their attempts to follow the Lord. When we attempt to follow the Lord in our own strength, we will fail. When we become totally dependent on the Lord, we will pray, “All that the Lord has said Hewill do.” We will be able to live the Holy Spirit empowered life.

We will live the Holy Spirit empowered life when we follow the five commands in Romans 6:11-13.
