THE COMFORTER, THE COMFORTERS

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; [Even] the Spirit of truth... John 14:16-17a  KJV

Rather than the word “Comforter” other translations use other words in translating the Greek word. However, “comforter” is one meaning of the word. Jesus is speaking of the Holy Spirit.

When we are filled with the Holy Spirit who lives within us, He comforts us when we need that divine touch in our lives. He also uses us to comfort others. Second Corinthians 1:3-4 reads:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

In two ways, the Holy uses us to be a comfort to others. They must see or hear about the comfort we have received in a troubling time in our own lives. When trouble comes to them leaving them in much suffering, they may come to us wanting to know how we were comforted.

We have shown them with our lives that one can be comforted in those difficult circumstances and now we have an opportunity to tell them how they may have that same comfort.

Our immediate response to their question would be to take them to Romans 6 and show them how to receive God’s grace. When we are under grace, we are filled with the Holy Spirit—The Great Comforter.
