THE POWER OF WORDS

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21

In a recent study, it was learned that 62% of children between the ages of 11-14 have been referred to by significant others or their peers as ugly, stupid or worthless. Millions of children, young people and adults around the world are hindered in their pursuit of happiness and/or holiness due to believing an untrue statement made about them.

A minister sharing his testimony recalled that during his childhood his Father told him (during a moment of anger) that he (the son) would be a failure in life. According to the minister, these words kept him in spiritual bondage for over 20 years. It was only after being introduced to the message of grace that he was able to reject this “prophetic statement.”

The writer of Proverbs through divine inspiration understood the power of words. He states that “death and life are in the power of words.” “Words” have shattered communication, destroyed relationships and ruined the joy and health of many.

Luke 4:22 states, “So all bore witness to Him (Jesus), and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth.” When we follow the five commands in Romans 6:11-13 and subsequently live the Sprit Filled Life, we will “yield our members (parts of the body) as instruments of righteousness to God.” Our tongue will be under the control of the Holy Spirit and our words will not be those that cause pain, hurt, anger, rejection, but rather will be gracious, wholesome, encouraging, healing and uplifting.

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips” Psalm 141:3. Our guard is the Holy Spirit.
