PREPARE FOR THE ATTACKS OF SATAN

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.  Ephesians 6:13

“Therefore” ties this statement of preparation to the revelation that our enemy is Satan and his entire kingdom. “The evil day” refers to those times when we are under attack by our enemy who often uses some individual to make the attack.  Jesus said that we will be hated just as He was hated. Whether the attack is internal by Satan or external by Satan through some person, we can be prepared by putting on the whole armor of God.

In Ephesians 6:14-17 Paul lists the parts of the armor that prepare us for those days of attack. They are truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God.

We arm ourselves with truth, peace and faith by receiving the filling of the Holy Spirit (John 16:13, Galatians 5:22). Galatians 5:24 teaches that when we gave our lives to Jesus, our flesh was crucified. Galatians 5:17 shows that it is our flesh that keeps us from being filled with the Holy Spirit. When we experience our crucifixion, the flesh is put out of power and we are filled with the Holy Spirit.

Romans 5:17 tells us to receive the gift of righteousness. This also comes from experiencing our oneness with Christ (Romans 6:11-13).

The word “salvation” refers to Christian growth. In John 17:17, Jesus asks the Father to “sanctify” His followers through the truth of His word. Our sanctification is our Christian growth. This draws us again to our experiencing our spiritual crucifixion, burial and resurrection and the filling of the Holy Spirit. Jesus says in John 16:13, “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth” and in John 14:26 Jesus says, “He will teach you all things.”

We put on the whole armor of God as we continually live out our spiritual crucifixion, burial and resurrection.

The sword of the Spirit which is the word of God is ours also when we are being filled with the Holy Spirit.
