OUR LIGHT AND GOD'S GLORY

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.  Matthew 5:16

Matthew 5:16 is a continuation of the two previous verses where Jesus says, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house” (Matthew 5:14-15). We are to do good works that are visible to others.

Ephesians 5:10 provides guidance about the good works we are to do. It says:

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Before creation, God planned the good works we are to do. When we received Jesus as Lord and Savior and were spiritually crucified, buried and resurrected, God prepared us to do the good works He had already prepared for us. We must permit Him to show us what those good works are.

We can get a general idea of the works God has planned for us by knowing the good works that the Father did through Jesus during His ministry before dying on Calvary. One of the major good works of Jesus was teaching. He shared truths about God, eternity, the heart of man and life. Another major good work of Jesus was His miracles. Through His miracles, Jesus was meeting needs and revealing the power and love of God. All of Jesus’ teaching and, seemingly, all of His miracles were done in the presence of others. His light was shining before men.

With our understanding of how the Father worked through Jesus, as we live out our union with Christ, God will show us the specific good works He has planned for us. He also will provide the resources for doing them.

The guidance of Jesus in Matthew 5:14-16 includes the promise that if we will do the good works God has planned for us some of them will be in the presence of others. Our light will shine before men and God will be glorified. This greatly simplifies one of the ways our lives bring Glory to Him.
