IT IS FINISHED

So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.  John 19:30

When Jesus died on the cross, His sacrifice of death for our sins was finished. Hebrews 10:12 says, “But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.” It is finished.

However, Jesus came to do other things. John 1:18 says, “No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.” Jesus came to show us what God the Father is like. He succeeded.

First Corinthians 15:45 says, “And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam [Jesus] became a life-giving spirit.” Jesus is the “last Adam” because He came to create a new race of people. His is the race of the born again. In His death, he completed that purpose for His coming to this earth.

Several times in the New Testament, Jesus is called a “man.” First Corinthians 15:47says, “The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven.” Jesus is the last Adam but He is the second man. Because of the new creation, there would be other men. Jesus came to show us what a real man looks like that we may follow in His footsteps. That work was finished when He died.

Jesus came to change man’s way of thinking. He began His ministry with one word “repent.” This means to change your mind.” Throughout His ministry, He taught and demonstrated how and what real men were to think. That work was finished.

We can participate in the things Jesus made possible for us by being saved by grace through faith and by living out our union with Him.
