MINISTERING THE NEW COVENANT

Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.  2 Corinthians 3:5-6

The entire third chapter of 2 Corinthians is about the ministry of the new covenant that God gave to Paul. It would be good for all who are called to the teaching and preaching ministry to study it.

He says that God made him sufficient for the ministry of the new covenant which is a ministry of the Holy Spirit that brings life—both in conversion and in Christian growth. It is life that is eternal when received by the new believer and the life that is abundant for the one who grows in living the new covenant.

In verse 9, Paul says that his ministry of the new covenant is also a ministry of righteousness. It results in a declared righteousness—justification—when one receives Jesus as Lord and Savior. The believer experiences a realized righteousness when he lives out the new covenant by experiencing his spiritual crucifixion, burial and resurrection.

The ministry of the Spirit, of life and of righteousness results in glory. Second Corinthians 3:9 says, “For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory” and will not fade away.

This glory comes upon the believer as the  result of gazing into the glorified face of Jesus through experiencing his spiritual resurrection.

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.  2 Corinthians 3:18
