BLESSED ASSURANCE

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God … Romans 8:16

A Christian young man having returned home after serving three years in the military in a foreign country, said to a friend:

While I was overseas, I went through a period of doubt about my salvation. You cannot imagine the agony of such an experience.

A true believer without the assurance of his salvation goes through more than agony. Almost everything that he does in his Christian service is hindered. His prayer life, his Bible reading and study, and his efforts to lead lost people to Christ are all excellent examples.

Many church members who doubt their salvation have, in fact, never received Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Yet, many who doubt their salvation are truly children of the Lord. To have the “blessed assurance” is possible and even imperative in one’s walk with the Lord.

The Book of 1 John lists specific signs indicating that we belong to the Lord: (2:4) one’s bent in life is to obey God, (3:9) the believer cannot live continuously in sin, (3:15) those born of God cannot hate, and (4:7) God’s love is in all who have been born of God

Romans 8:16 gives powerful evidence of assurance. It is the witness of the Holy Spirit within the heart of the believer that God is His Father and he is God’s child.

All of these assurances of salvation are intensified when we are filled with the Holy Spirit. And we will have that filling when we obey the five imperatives.
