WALKING IN THE LIGHT

But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.  1 John 1:7

First John 1:5 says, “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” Since God is in the light and is the light, walking in the light is living in fellowship with God. What is involved in such a high calling and privilege?

When we walk in the light, we do a lot of listening. We joyfully listen and respond to the One who is all loving and all-powerful. We joyfully listen and respond to the One who has all knowledge and all wisdom. We joyfully listen and respond to the One who planned our lives before the creation of the earth. We respond even when the guidance seems strange or even dangerous.

Because God is who He is and because He willfully guides us, we know it is not our place to initiate. Jesus never initiated. He always responded to His Heavenly Father.

While walking in the light means listening, it also includes some talking on our part. We praise our Heavenly Father because of who He is. We praise and thank Him for His expressions of love. We tell our Heavenly Father that we love and trust Him.

We talk to our Heavenly Father in our prayers of petition and intercession. We honor and delight our Heavenly Father when we seek, ask, and knock. If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us and does the things we ask.

Walking in the light results in fellowship with other believers (1 John 1:7). Psalm 133:1 says:

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

It would be difficult to overstate the grief and damage broken fellowships among believers have caused through the years. It would be difficult to overstate the blessings that God has brought to and through the Kingdom through strong Christian fellowships.

When we are walking in our oneness with Christ, we are walking in the light.
