OUR OTHER HELPER (8)

Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.  2 Corinthians 3:5-6

When Jesus led His Apostles in the observance of the Lord’s Supper, He said to them, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.”

The First Covenant is the one God made with the Jews at Mount Sinai. It was a covenant of works on the part of the Jewish nation. 2 Corinthians 3:6 explains that Jesus made a New Covenant which is “of the Spirit.”

Our other helper is the very heart of the New Covenant. There are other facets of the New Covenant, but they all center in the Holy Spirit. If we are to live out the New Covenant Jesus has made possible, we will live it out in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Sadly, most believers have no knowledge of the Holy Spirit. Even fewer have knowledge of the New Covenant. Recently, a pastor asked about a hundred pastors how many of them have heard a sermon on the New Covenant. One hand was raised.

If we are to ever live out the New Covenant of grace, we must become acquainted with what Scripture says about the New Covenant and about the Holy Spirit. Our only resource for understanding of either of these is Scripture. A starting place for knowing something about the Holy Spirit could be a real study of the last 11 of these devotionals. If you have deleted those 11, you can find them on our Web Site. The address of our Web Site is livingbygrace.

Much of what has been written in the 11 devotionals is taken from John chapter 14 and 16. The entire third chapter of 2 Corinthians is about the New Covenant. We have a book titled “Living the New Covenant” that we would be happy to send you one or more copies of at no expense to you.

Hopefully, God will start a movement among all evangelicals  on a study of the New Covenant and the Holy Spirit. We can all be in prayer for that.
