OUR OTHER HELPER (7)

If I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.  John 16:7-11

One key to understanding this statement of Jesus about the Holy Spirit is an understanding of the word translated “convict.”  “Open their eyes.” could express the meaning of the Greek word. The Holy Spirit will make known to the world sin, righteousness and judgment.

The Holy Spirit will make known to the lost world that sin is the unbelief and rejection of Jesus as Lord and Savior. We might think that the worst sin is murder or some other type of immoral living. The Holy Spirit opens the eyes of the world to the fact that “unbelief and rejection of Jesus” is the greatest sin of all.

“... of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more.” The Holy Spirit will open the eyes of the world to righteousness because Jesus has gone to the Father. If Jesus had not gone to the Father, He would not have sent the Holy Spirit to live in the lives of believers. Righteousness is not the good things a person does. Righteousness in a person is a result of the indwelling and working of the Holy Spirit. Romans 14:17 says, “for the kingdom of God is ... righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”

“… when He (the Holy Spirit) has come, … He will convict the world of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.” It is difficult to know exactly what the words “because the ruler of this world is judged” mean. However, it is very clear that the Holy Spirit will open the eyes of lost sinners to their coming judgment.

John 7:38-39 quotes Jesus saying, “…He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. But this He spoke concerning the Spirit.” The Holy Spirit will flow from the lives of Spirit-filled believers to open the eyes of the world and draw them to Jesus.
