RENEWAL OF THE SPIRIT OF OUR MINDS

… be renewed in the spirit of your mind.  Ephesians 4:23

We speak of a person’s spirit with words like, “He has a spirit of kindness,” or “He has a spirit of anger.” A person’s spirit is revealed by attitudes and actions that most characterize his life.

The spirit of a person’s mind is revealed when it is obvious that he continually thinks about certain things. In speaking of the spirit of one’s mind, we might say things like, “His mind is always on the things of the Lord,” or “His mind is always on himself.”

Paul must be referring to the spirit of our minds when he writes:

… the mind of the flesh… and the mind of the Spirit … Romans 8:6 (author’s translation)

When one’s mind is continually on thoughts produced by our flesh, a renewed spirit of his mind would be a change to continually having thoughts produced by the Holy Spirit.

Just before Paul’s statement about the renewing the spirit of our minds he wrote the following about Jesus:

… you have been taught by Him … to put off … the old man … Ephesians 4:20-21 (author’s translation)

When we put off the old man, we put off the mind of the flesh. We put off thoughts produced by our flesh.

In the verse following the statement about the renewing of the spirit of our minds, Paul writes the following about Jesus:

… you have been taught by Him … to put on the new man … Ephesians 4:24 (author’s translation)

When we put off the old man and put on the new man, we receive the filling of the Holy Spirit. We put on thoughts produced by the Holy Spirit.

We put off the old man and put on the new man as we live out the now-creation life. As we continually live out the new-creation life, we continually experience the renewal of our minds.
