GOOD NEWS FOR THE GENEROUS

Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.   2 Corinthians  9:10-11

These verses are part of the appeal Paul was making to the church at Corinth for their support of an offering he was taking for the poor Christians in Jerusalem. All of chapters 8 and 9 are given to his appeal. In these verses, he writes of the blessings that come to those who are generous givers.

The first blessing the passage mentions is that God will increase the seed of the sower. That is, God will provide the ones who give with larger resources that He might increase their opportunities for being generous.

The passage adds that God “will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.” The message is that when God increases the sowers resources, more people will benefit from his acts of righteousness—his being generous.

Another blessing for the generous giver will be, “You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion ….” God expands the capacity for the generous giver to be a blessing beyond giving money. For example, generous givers will be given greater faith and greater knowledge of spiritual things. Both of these increase one’s resources for helping others.

In addition, “…your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.”

If you find it difficult to help others, live out your oneness with Christ and be filled with the Holy Spirit. He will fill you with the love of God—who is the greatest of all givers.
