TREES OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified."  Isaiah 61:3

This verse is in the passage from Isaiah that Jesus read in the synagogue in Nazareth revealing that He was the Messiah. In the passage, He mentions many things that God had anointed Him to do.

He mentions that He was anointed to console those who mourn in Zion. He will give those who mourn “beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness that they may be called trees of righteousness.”

When we are in a circumstance of suffering and can see no way out we will give up our self confidence and turn to the Lord. When suffering at the point of desperation takes away our faith in ourselves and pushes us to dependence on God, We look to God and His grace to enable us to endure the suffering and to deliver us from it. This can result in prolonged dependence on God and fellowship with God. This results in our being given “beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness that we may become trees of righteousness.”

The trees of righteousness bring glory to God because others can see God’s grace at work in them.

Some say, “Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior and all our problems will be over.” The statement about the trees of righteousness declares that statement to be untrue.
