AWAKENED FOR GUIDANCE

He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear To hear as the learned. The Lord God has opened My ear.  Isaiah 50:4

This is a prophecy about Jesus during His ministry on earth. God the Father awakens the Son morning by morning to listen for guidance. He awakens His ear. He awakens Him to give Him a message of comfort for the weary and “to hear as the learned” (verse 4).

Luke 4:42-44 records Jesus getting up early one morning after a day of a great healing ministry and going to a private place to pray. The people could not find Him. When they did find Him, they begged Him not to leave Capernaum. His response was that He must preach in other cities. Jesus knew He needed guidance and He must seek it at the beginning of the day. Surely, the Father also talked to the Son throughout the day as well as when He was first awakened in the morning.

Can we experience life like this? Evidently the words “walking in the Spirit” tell us that we can. These words say that the Holy Spirit is ready to give guidance. They say that we must open our hearts to the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

In the prophecy of Isaiah, Jesus adds, “The Lord God has opened My ear; And I was not rebellious, Nor did I turn away.” Jesus never hesitated to do what the Father told Him to do. Isaiah 50:6-7 reveals that Jesus went through the cruelty just before the cross and the experience of the cross under the leadership of the Father. Our heavenly Father is looking for us to do the same.

The most important thing we can do in order to hear and respond to the Spirit’s guidance is to be filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).
