EXPERIENCING THE HOLY SPIRIT

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts.  Hebrews 8:10

This verse introduces the New Covenant that God has given His children. It obviously is a reference to the Holy Spirit. This should tell us that God’s people must have an understanding of the Holy Spirit. Second Corinthians 3:5-6 teaches the same thing. As Paul explains the New Covenant. He writes:

Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

Christians should not be living under the covenant that God gave to the nation of Israel through Moses. That covenant kills. That covenant is a covenant of the flesh (Romans 8:3). We must understand that in the New Covenant we are to walk in the Spirit.

These truths make it essential for Christians to become acquainted with and experience the Holy Spirit. Perhaps the most basic thing a Christian needs to know about the Holy Spirit is that the He lives in him. First Corinthians 6:17 says, “But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.” That is why Christians experience change at the time of their salvation experience.

When the Holy Spirit came into our lives to be joined with our spirits at conversion, He came to stay. As Hebrews 8:10 teaches, He came to tell us what the Father wants us to do and enables us to do it. There are many other things that the Holy Spirit provides that enable us to live out the New Covenant.

We are to live out our lives being filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). When we are filled with the Spirit, we are lifted into an entirely new level of life which is available to all who have been born again.
