FACE SET LIKE A FLINT

For the Lord God will help Me; Therefore I will not be disgraced; Therefore I have set My face like a flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed. Isaiah 50:7

This statement is in a passage that Old Testament scholars call a “servant passage.” It is a prophecy of Jesus. His statement, “I have set My face like a flint,” is an expression of passionate determination.

Verse 6 of the passage has Jesus saying, “I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.” These words prophesy the treatment Jesus went through at His trial just before the cross.

Jesus’ statement of determination shows that in spite of the treatment He had received at the trial nothing would stop Him from going to the cross to die for us.

Verse 9 has Jesus saying, “Surely the Lord God will help Me; Who is he who will condemn Me? Indeed they will all grow old like a garment; The moth will eat them up.” This is a prophecy of the judgment of God on those who have given Him such abusive treatment.

We can believe that this is a prophecy of what will happen to those who abuse the followers of Jesus in our time.

In light of what Jesus went through to make possible the crucifixion of our old man. Let us set our face like a flint with determination to experience our spiritual crucifixion.

Surely, anytime one of God’s children experiences his own spiritual crucifixion, Jesus surely rejoices knowing that a life will be changed and that His crucifixion made it possible.
