DESIRE FULFILLED

And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. Mark 10:44-45

In reading the Gospels, it is easy to understand the desires of the Apostles to be great. It is also obvious that they wanted to be great in the eyes of man. Over and over Jesus told His Apostles that greatness was in being the servant of others. Of course, He is not talking about being great in the eyes of man but in the eyes of God.

It is living out our union with Christ that enables us to become great in the eyes of God by being servants of others. There are two aspects to how this can happen.

In 2 Corinthians 5:14-15, Paul writes:

For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.

It is through experiencing out crucifixion with Christ that we can be set free from our self-centeredness.

The last two of the commands for living by grace are:

… present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and [present] your members as instruments of righteousness to God. Romans 6:13b

Anyone living out his life making himself available to God for Him to use him in acts of righteousness will be a servant of others.

Experiencing our oneness with Christ makes these two things possible. Experiencing our oneness with Christ prepares us for greatness in the eyes of God.
