FREEDOM THROUGH THE SPIRIT

Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.  2 Corinthians 3:17

With the words, “the letter kills,” Paul is referring to the failure one experiences when he seeks to live by the Old Covenant in which God gave the rules and the Israelites were to follow the rules. That approach brings believers emotional death. The New Covenant “of the Spirit” brings life. Through the rest of the chapter, Paul continues his contrast of the New Covenant with the Old Covenant.

In Galatians chapter 4, Paul had written about the two covenants—the Old Covenant that God gave the Israelites at Mount Sinai and the New Covenant Jesus brought into being. In Galatians 5:1, Paul writes to the Galatian believers, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

With his words in 2 Corinthians 3:17, “where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty,” Paul is saying what he had written in Galatians 5:1. In the New Covenant which is about the Holy Spirit’s power at work in and through believers, there is freedom from the law and sin.

In Romans 7:9, Paul wrote, “I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death.”

Let us thank God for the freedom of the New Covenant and live it out through living by grace.
