do you have your eagle's wings?

But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.  Isaiah 40:31

Waiting on the Lord can suggest the thought of inactivity. The words mounting up with wings like eagles, running, and walking suggest the idea of trusting God for His guidance, His timing, and His strength.

The words of Isaiah 40:10-29 give an impressive description of God. The verses tell of His loving protection, His greatness, His strength, His power, His wisdom, and His abundant provision of man's needs. With the word “wait” in verse 31, God offers to make available all that He is to human beings who trust him.

He who trusts in God renews his strength. He exchanges his imagined strength for all the awesome strength of God.

There are three figures of speech in Isaiah 40:31. They illustrate the result of living out of the strength and wisdom of God. One of the figures of speech is that of mounting up with wings like eagles.

Some eagles have a wingspread of as much as seven feet in length and many inches in width. Eagles use their wings to travel long distances with little effort. An eagle finds a current of warm wind and with its wings spread it gets in the current. The current of wind carries the eagle with little effort on the part of the eagle. When that current of wind ceases, the eagle finds another current of wind.

Mounting up with wings like eagles pictures a child of God going forward with the current of the spiritual wind of God—the Holy Spirit.

This does not mean inactivity on the part of the believer. It does mean allowing the Holy Spirit to move in the life of the believer. It is the activity of following as the Holy Spirit leads. At the same time, it is the relaxation of not having to struggle to make decisions and not having the need to make things happen.

Do you have your eagle’s wings?

If not, live out your union with Christ. The result will be living by faith in God in all areas of your life. It will mean mounting up with wings like eagles.
