INCREASING IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD

… we … do not cease to pray for you, and to ask … that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him,… increasing in the knowledge of God … Colossians 1:9-10

“Increasing in the knowledge of God” is one characteristic of a walk worthy of the Lord and it is pleasing to the Lord.

A steady increase in knowing God as loving, forgiving, faithful, all-wise, all-powerful, and always present brings enormous blessings to every believer. Those blessings are spiritual, physical, emotional, social, moral, and, when there is a need, financial.

A seminary professor told of placing the letter “M” or the letter “G” by the side of each paragraph of the sermons that were submitted by his students. Each paragraph was either about man or about God. As the professor read the works of his students he found many “Ms” but few “Gs.” When sermons are expositions of the Scriptures, congregations experience an increase of the knowledge of God.

All believers have had some increasing knowledge of God through Bible lessons and sermons. Also many have come to a better understanding of God through personal Bible reading and through personal experiences with God when He revealed Himself as loving, forgiving, faithful, wise, and powerful.

Increase in the knowledge of God often comes to God’s children through Christian music. What child of God does not know God better through singing “One Day,” “Amazing Grace,” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, and “God Sent His Son?” Choruses such as “Jesus loves me” and “God is so Good” increase our knowledge of God.

Jesus teaches of a lesser-known, but the most important, source of increase in the knowledge of God in John 16:13-15. He says:

… when He, the Spirit of truth, has come … He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

When we live out our union with Christ, we are filled with the Spirit and He reveals to us truths about God the Father and God the Son. Our increase in this knowledge always brings honor and pleasure to God.
