GOD'S INHERITANCE IN THE SAINTS

… that you may know … what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints … Ephesians 1:18

Ephesians 1:18 is part of a prayer. In this prayer Paul asked God to open the eyes of the believers so that they may know three things—which are: “the hope of God’s calling,” “the riches of the glory of God’s inheritance in the saints” and “the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe.”

The most unexpected part of the prayer is that believers may know “the riches of the glory of God’s inheritance in the saints.” Paul was praying that all believers may know their importance to God.

Consider the use of the word “saints.” All believers are saints. That is, all believers have been set apart by God to Himself to be available to Him—so He can live and work through them..

The inheritance is “the riches of His glory.” That is, the inheritance God has in His saints is “the riches of the glory they bring to Him.” As the Lord lives His life through the saints, the result is glory to Him.

Ephesians 2:10 explains How God receives glory from His saints:

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

At conversion, God does a creative work in the lives of new believers that prepares them to do the good works that He planned for them from eternity.

God does this creative work in new believers when the Holy Spirit baptizes them into the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. It is this creative act on God’s part that equips believers to do the good works He planned for them from eternity.

These truths simplify the life of the believer. May each believer understand that when he lives out the creative work of God, he is living as a saint. Also he will bring glory to God by doing the good works God has planned for him.

May every believer realize his great importance to God.
