GROWING IN FAITH

… the fruit of the Spirit is … faith … Galatians 5:22 (KJV)

Jesus taught that the most important commandment is to love God with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength.

The believer’s greatest need, though, is faith. Faith in God enables us to love God. By faith we receive divine love from Him. It is impossible for any man to generate divine love. Galatians 5:6 speaks of “faith working through love.”

Hebrews 11:1 describes faith as being:

… the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

This verse tells us that Christian faith knows that there is a God in heaven and that He is always at work for our benefit.

As our faith increases, we please God. We become God’s instrument for doing great miracles. As our faith increases, we become people of courage and we will expect great things in the future. As our faith increases, we will live in victory and trust God to express His righteousness through us.

Some believers have a gift of faith according to 1 Corinthians 12:4-9. Those who have the gift of faith can lead a church in faith ventures even if they are not necessarily the most spiritual members of the church.

Most of us do not have the gift of faith. There are ways, however, that we can grow in faith—reading the Scriptures, spending time with people of faith, reading biographies of people of faith, and having our own experiences of faith.

Our greatest resource for growing in faith is experiencing our oneness with Christ.

Living out our oneness with Christ results in a growing faith that manifests itself in at least two ways. We are free from trusting in ourselves and therefore this enables us to trust in God. Also we are filled with the Spirit and “The fruit of the Spirit is … faith.”
