HOW MUCH LIGHT?

You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.  Matthew 5:14-16

Following His statement that we are the light of the world, Jesus says that lights can be put under a basket or on a lampstand. Have we been guilty of putting our light under a basket when it should have been on a lampstand?

A young Christian man tells of an incident when he was the new man on a working crew. One day during a break a total stranger sat down beside him and said, “I have something interesting to show you.” He then showed the young man a deck of cards. When he got to the third card, the young Christian realized he was showing him pornography. He got up and walked away.

Sometime after the incident, the young Christian came to believe the entire incident was a setup to hurt his testimony with the other men on his crew. By getting up and walking away his light was on a lampstand in the presence of his fellow workers. But how much light would have been shining if he had stayed and watched the pornography?

It is conceivable that some Christians are put to the test more than they realize. Satan is at work in the lives of those who are his own to put out the lights that reveal the darkness of his kingdom.

We are a light and we need to keep it shining. When we live out our union with Christ in experiencing our spiritual crucifixion, burial and resurrection, we put our light on a lampstand and our light will shine brightly in this darkened world.
