LONG ENOUGH

Then we turned and journeyed into the wilderness of the Way of the Red Sea, as the Lord spoke to me, and we skirted Mount Seir for many days. And the Lord spoke to me, saying 'You have skirted this mountain long enough; turn northward.’  Deuteronomy 2:1-3

God had told the Israelites who refused to believe that He could give them the Promised Land that all the men of war (Deuteronomy 2:16) 20 years and older would die before the conquest of the Promised Land would begin. The taking of the land would begin in 40 years.

At some point during that 40 year waiting period, God led the Israelites to Mount Seir. With the cloud above, God led them to circle that mountain again and again. In light of the 40 year waiting period, it could have been for weeks or months or even years. Image the monotony of such a life in comparison with the excitement of watching God give them victory after victory in the conquering of the Promised Land.

This seemingly waste of time could have stirred anger and bitterness in the younger ones who would take the Promised Land—in 40 years. Also, it could have brought them to the decision not to make the same mistake of unbelief when their opportunity came to posses the land.

We can wonder how many believers in our churches are living on the same spiritual level they have been on since their first weeks or months or years following their conversion. They have not grown in spiritual knowledge, in their prayer lives, in their faith and other aspects of the Christian life. For some their spiritual life has become so boring they no longer attend church.

Those whose Christian lives have degenerated into a state of dullness and monotony need to understand that they have stayed too long on the same spiritual level. The thrill and incitement will return when the choose living the life of grace.
