“I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH”

And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.  Matthew 16:18

There are different interpretations about what Jesus meant when He said, “on this rock I will build my church.” Some say he was speaking of the rock of “Peter’s confession that He was the Christ the Son of the living God.” Others say that with the word rock he was referring to Himself. Yet, others say he was referring to Peter because He called him a rock.

However, there is no question about the meaning of the words of Jesus, “I will build my church.” The word “church” obviously refers to a local church while it can be a reference to the Kingdom of God.

In either usage of the word, Jesus is the builder. It is easy for us to think of ourselves as being the builders. However, the words of Jesus exclude us. This does not mean that we have no responsibility in the building of the church. Paul writes in Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”

Some of us have wondered in what way is Jesus the builder of the church if God has given us the responsibility of being the leaders of the church.

Our place in the building of the church is to make our lives available to Jesus for Him to use us in the building of the church. This means that in the building of the church, we are to permit Jesus to make all the decisions and provide all the power and resources.

This is one reason that those of us who understand and live out our union with Christ need to be available for Jesus to use us in getting out the word about the believer’s oneness with Christ to our fellow believers.
